A
special ecosystem inside a large, round bottle is attracting many
people’s attention from all over the world. The mini ecosystem shows
the great power of nature.
David Latimer in the United Kingdom said that he decided to start
a garden in a bottle in 1960 out of curiosity and just for fun.
Latimer first began cultivating some plants in a large bottle without
a lid until 1972. Then, he sealed the bottle with a lid as an experiment.
This completely stopped outside air from entering the bottle. Next,
he placed the bottle under the staircase in his house. He has not
watered the garden inside the bottle since 1972. The air, nutrients,
and water inside the bottle have circulated, allowing the garden
to continue to grow.
Surprisingly, the plants in the bottle are all still alive. They
continue to grow in the sealed bottle. This small, interesting world
might be thought of as a mini Earth. Latimer wants to pass on the
plants to his grown children.
